Bob Turner was coach and marketing guru for the Sydney Kings during their successful run in the 1990's where 10,000 people were attending every game, the team was making $1 million in profit each year and players like Dwayne McClain were getting their own shoes from Reebok.

Andrew Bogut agreeing to play with the Kings gives the team the best chance of returning (or eclipsing) the kings to their former glory.

Bob has 20 years of experience playing, coaching, marketing and running NBL teams. He joined us on the show to talk about the impact Andrew Bogut will have on the Sydney Kings, the NBL and the future of Australian Basketball

Read more about Bob Turner's role in the growth of the NBL.

Topics discussed on the podcast include;

  • Why basketball will be a top #2 sport in Australia by 2022 (2:00)
  • Recapping Andrew Bogut's retirement from the NBA and decision to play for the Kings (9:30)
  • Andrew Bogut's NBL deal includes ownership stakes with the Kings, has this ever happened before? (10:15)
  • Sydney Kings management believe they can reach crowds of 17,000 is this a little ambitious? (15.45)
  • What do the Sydney Kings need to do next from a marketing perspective to capitalise further on this (21:30)
  • How will Andrew Gaze handle coaching this team? (25:00)
  • How does Bogut change the culture within the Sydney Kings (32:00)
  • Does Bogut in the NBL deliver a free to air TV deal on one of the main networks? (36:00)
  • NBA players wanting to by NBL teams and the return of the South East Melbourne Magic (40:00)

Cairns Taipans shooting guard Kuany Kuany is just starting his professional basketball but his NBL future is bright.

He played limited minutes in the NBL his rookie season but is set to play a big part of Mike Kelly's new look Cairns Taipans squad with only himself and Nate Jawai set to return next season.

Kuany is one of the many Sudanese Australian basketball stars making noise in the NBL, Europe and the NBA.

We talk to Kuany about NBA stars Thon Maker and Mangok Mathiang and current NBL stars like Majok Majok and Majok Deng and the impact they are having on the Sudanese Community.

The talk even cascades into issues like racism in Australia and why young Sudanese don't feel like they may never be "truly" Australia and what drives young Sudanese youth to become gang members.

2:00 The history of Sudanese Basketball players in Australia.

7:30 The loss of Aaron Fearne as head coach and how that impacts the Cairns Taipans

8:30 Kuany reviews his rookie NBL season

12:30 The NBL Finals and what stood out to Kuany

18:00 What it was like living in Sudan in the middle of a civil war

24:30 Committing to play college basketball for the Chaminade University of Honolulu

27:30 Being recruited by the Cairns Taipans

29:00 Racism that Kuany suffered growing up in Melbourne, thoughts on the Apex Gang and other Sudanese gangs giving Sudanese Australians a bad name

The Ben Simmons Vs Donovan Mitchell race for Rookie of the Year, is it really a race? Seems pretty one-sided to me.

Dante Exum soon to return from injury, Joe Ingles has the best month of his life, Is Aron Baynes good or bad for the Celtics lineup and Patty Mills is insulted by being called a Jamaican bobsledder.

Tune in to get up to date with who has been playing well, stats breakdowns and any injury updates involving our Australian Boomers players abroad.

All of this and a whole lot more...
